Here is a brief musing on at least three kinds of idk’s that I know of.
1. A complacent ignorance – I don’t know and I don’t care. “Is that person over there reading a good comic book?” “ugh, idk?”
2. A curious ignorance – I don’t know, but I would like to know more. “How is Apple still profitable amidst tough economic times?” “idk?”
3. A confused ignorance – I know too much and don’t know what’s what. “Should Christians be involved in politics?” “ugh, idk?
Situations and personal values often dictate the meaning of the particular idk. It can be powerfully liberating when used properly.
1. Complacent ignorance – This isn’t important. Life is too short. Lets move on to something I want to know about.
2. Curious ignorance – In the words of one of our church fathers, this is “faith seeking understanding.”
3. Confused ignorance – I don’t think there is a wooden answer here. I have to be mindful of my options when approaching this topic.
So, don’t be afraid to admit what you don’t know. It can be the beginning of wisdom.
