It is interesting that we can get so caught up in spending much time trying to rid our culture, nation, etc, of 'evil' and 'ungodly' things rather than getting on with the purpose that Jesus called us to - proclaiming the message of God's kingdom and reconciliation plan. God seems to have set it that when people hear the good news and are transformed by Christ, then all the other stuff begins to work itself out - we lay aside those things that are unhelpful and start pursuing Him.

On your thoughts to do with the Magistrate - I would address these issues more from the institutional church standpoint. The institutional church (not always pursuing the heart and purpose of God) have done a lot of unhelpful and ungodly things. Many of those who have been a part of the 'institution' have not always been Christians and have been caught up in power and money struggles. Some have been Christians, and unfortunately, they (and we) too have been very selfish and arrogant. And I'm not trying to overlook things done by the church in the past that have been horrible - oppression of blacks in the US and South Africa, the Crusades, the early settlers of America and what they did to Native Americans, etc. But many times it is those who are claiming to be Christians, but are not that get heavily involved in acting as this 'Magistrate' - that whole taking God's name in vain thing. They say, 'Yes, I am a follower of Christ (claiming His name)', but they are not really interested in walking out the life.

Thus, maybe Dan Brown and Richard Dawkins are mad at the 'magistrate' or 'church institution' and are not very informed about the organism.

Just some thoughts.

Pretty intense ponderings from a newborn. I thought he would start out a little slower than that. I don't even think he can hold his own head up yet.

Some are made as people who see the glass half-full; some are made as those who see the glass as half-empty. Both are needed. They both bring a needed perspective. We must respect both. For those who are likely to see the glass as half-empty, which includes me, we need to make right judgments as we look at aspects of life, and in doing so, we are not being judgmental. But we also need to be careful that, in our heart's desire to see the things that need to change actually change, we are not led into any cyncicism or over-bitterness. He is in charge, and we are challenged to trust that.
